Intouch Hand Installation (about Turkish Culture)

showcased in bodig 09 (France)

Intouch

Intouch is an interactive video installation that aims to bring forth the Turkish perception of the body in relation to other bodies. As the viewer approaches the installation they see a picture of two hands and in between them a projection. In the projection area there is another sculpted hand reaching out.

When the users approach the installation they can see that there is a dark video playing and the pixels of it are constantly changing their hue and saturation. So the users can't really understand what the video is. If they reach out and touch the sculpted hand, the pixels slowly find their own color and the footage of people from Turkiye become visible. The footage reveals different aspects of cultural body usage as a way of communication.

The connection requires patience and effort from the users’ side; therefore they have to stay in touch for some time for the pixels to reveal the footage. When the users pull their hands back; the pixels go back to their dark quality.

Intouch Hand Installation (Africa)

showcased at the United Nations Headquarters in New York
and Ekav Art Gallery in Istanbul

The interaction in this installation is the same as the previous one.

If they reach out and touch the hand the pixels slowly find their own color and the footage of children from Tanzania and Ghana become visible. In the video the children are constantly smiling and waving at the users. This footage gets interrupted every 8 seconds with a video of hygiene problems these children are facing with the water they drink. This interrupting video footage only enters for a few seconds.

Double Projection Installation

showcased in Interactive Telecommunications Program Show (New York)

IntouchIntouchIntouch

This installation is about realization and awareness. It consists of two projections and an incomplete puzzle. 5 plexi-glass pieces covered in reflective metal paint are missing their 6th piece to make a complete circular puzzle. As the puzzle sits on the surface there is a screen on the bottom of it. In the screen there is a movie from Ghana showing how people have to carry the water from outside the houses on their heads for a long distance for their basic needs. From the top a projection of someone from a more privileged country wasting water in a daily routine of brushing their teeth is shown. When the pieces are put on the screen only the top projection is visible, when they are taken out mostly the video on the bottom is visible with a slight reflection of the top projection. This installation is a representation of our awareness and our choices to open our eyes to the problems.

Reaching In & Out Installation

showcased in Interactive Telecommunications Program Show (New York)

This installation is about finding the balance in life about reaching out and reaching in. The physical interaction is through an antique scale. There are 2 circular videos playing side to side when the scale is in balance. 1 of the videos is a live feedback of the user, and the other one is a video from Ghana. When the scale is in balance both videos will be clear but if the user changes the weights and puts more weight on one side, the video of that side will be very clear but the other one will start to blur. My aim to achieve with this installation is to create a mirror of our selves and the world. Are we good at finding the balance to look both at our lives and the lives of the others that are not as privileged.
